Acatenango Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Elcaballero: The catastrophic outbreak of nearby Fuego volcano on June 3rd 2018 has also covered the flanks of Acatenango with a load of volcanic ashes and lapilli. This has led to changes in the environment of the cache location. I visited cache location yesterday and tried to find the container but in vain.
Therefore I regretfully have to archive this cache, good bye Acatenango! Thanks for all your visits!

Geocache Description:

Third highest mountain of Guatemala with breathtaking views along the chain of volcanoes from Mexico to El Salvador

This dormant volcano (3976 m) is located near the old capital of Guatemala, Antigua. To get there you can arrange a tour with local agents or (for the more adventurous ones) climb yourself starting at trailhead or in the valley of Antigua to reach the crest between Acatenango and Fuego. It is advisable to hire a local guide at La Soledad. It is possible to stay overnight at the peak (inside the crater) or at the campsite about half way up. As additional kick nearby Fuego often erupts with spectacular fumes or even glowing lava visible at night. Photographs are welcome!

You need to bring enough food, a lot to drink and clothes to change as the nights are freezing cold during dry season.
