LA TONNARA A tre chilometri dal centro di San vito Lo Capo si trova uno dei luoghi simbolo dell’intero territorio: la Tonnara del Secco, tappa obbligatoria per chi vuole conoscere la ricchezza di questi luoghi.
La Tonnara del Secco entra ufficialmente in funzione nel 1412, a seguito dell'autorizzazione concessa dal Re Ferdinando che permise la pesca del tonno nel mare Sanvitese.
Le reti venivano "calate" vicino la riva e pescavano i tonni provenienti da levante che costeggiavano Castellammare del Golfo e l' attuale Riserva dello Zingaro.
Nel 1860 Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour espropria i beni religiosi e nel 1865 la Tonnara del Secco fu posta in vendita all' asta ed acquistata nel 1872 dal Cav. Vito Foderà il quale possedeva già la Tonnara Magazzinazzi di Castellamare.
Degli aristocratici edifici facevano da contorno all'antica Tonnara, le cui reti venivano calate a pochi metri dalla riva per catturare i grossi tonni che in primavera percorrevano le acque del golfo di Castellammare nella loro corsa per la riproduzione. Chi ha assistito alle (discutibili) mattanze di San Vito ricorda che i proprietari se ne stavano con i loro ospiti comodamente seduti sul terrazzo del "Palazzotto" mentre a pochi metri di distanza la "ciurma" faceva mattanza. Le reti ormai non vengono calate più dal 1969, ma il luogo è ancora pieno di fascino ed i pescatori che lo frequentano raccontano anche volentieri purtroppo le avventure della mattanza che in quei luoghi era un po come la corrida in Spagna.
Accanto agli immobili della tonnara si possono ancora oggi ammirare i resti di antichissimi impianti di lavorazione del pesce in cocciopesto, che risalgono al IV secolo prima di Cristo. Qui si lavorava il pesce - anche tonni - che nel mare prospiciente venivano catturati. Le vasche sono realizzate in cocciopesto e "in elevato", con una canaletta di scolo per lo scarico delle acque della lavorazione a mare.
La tonnara ad oggi è stata utilizzata per svariati film o fiction come location come ad esempio il film "Cefalonia" o il film "Giro di boa" de"Il Commissario Montalbano".
L'area centrale non è pericolosa stando attenti a dove si mettono i piedi ovviamente.

Three kilometers from the center of San Vito Lo Capo is one of the landmarks of the entire territory: the Tonnara del Secco, a must for those who want to know the wealth of these places.
The Tonnara del Secco officially enters into operation in 1412, following the authorization granted by King Ferdinand that allowed tuna fishing in the sea Sanvitese.

Who attended the (questionable) mattanze St. Vitus recalls that the owners were standing with their guests comfortably seated on the terrace of the "Mansion" while a few meters away the "crew" was slaughter. The net are now no more dropped since 1969, but the place is still full of charm and fishermen who frequent it unfortunately also gladly tell the adventures of the massacre that in those places was a bit like bullfighting in Spain.
Besides the properties of the trap you can still see the remains of ancient fish processing plants in earthenware, dating back to the fourth century before Christ. Here he worked the fish - even tuna - that were captured in the sea in front. The tanks are made of earthenware and "high", with a gutter for the discharge of water of the processing to the sea.
The tuna fishery to date has been used for several films or fiction as a location such as the film "Cefalonia" or the film "Turning point"from "Il Commissario Montalbano ".
The central area is not dangerous being careful where you put your feet obviously.
