This geocache will take you near the parking area to get to Loltun Caves (Grutas de Loltun). This cave is one of the most extensive caves in the Yucatan. There has been found, within the cave, bones of mammoth, deer and bison from the pleistocene period. The prehistoric Maya used the cave as shelter and the clay within the caves to make their tools. There is a natural column (stalactite) which is hollow and, when you hit it, you get musical tones (hence the name of this cache). It is believed that occupation in Loltún goes back more than 10,000 years. The caves are lit and you will be impressed. There are fees to enjoy this tourist site: 1. Parking fee; 2. Entrance fee; and 3. Guide tip. Last tour is at 4pm.
Location: 110 KM from Merida via highway 31. 4.3 miles from Oxkutzcab and 15 miles NorthEast of Labna ruins.
Many geocache containers seem to go missing in the Yucatan (hey, these containers are handy!!). If the container is not in sight, please take a photo of yourself at the cache location - thanks. The container will be replaced frequently.
