Geocache Description:

This replaces the original Martis Creek, Dam It cache, which was actually on the wall of the ice dam.  It has been moved so as to remove the cache from the archeologically sensitive dam itself now that the Legacy Trail will greatly increase human foot and bike traffic to the area.  It is now in a location that affords a great view of the ice dam walls, Martis Creek, and the surrounding areas.

The Truckee Legacy Trail follows the Truckee River from Truckee River Regional Park east to the neighborhoods of Glenshire Devonshire, Cambridge Estates, and The Meadows.  It goes through areas of geologic and historical interest.

The Truckee Legacy Trail is easily enjoyed on foot or by bike, and has many great views and multiple places to access the Truckee River.  Please be respectful of the fenced areas, which are protecting sensitive vegetation areas.

This cache overlooks the ice dams that were placed across Martis Creek in order to harvest ice in the winter to ship both to Reno and to San Francisco for year round clooling prior to the invention of electric refrigeration. There is an interpretive sign on the east end of the bridge across Martis Creek that further explains this. The cache itself resides above the ice dam, and allows views of a much larger area, including the Transcontinental Railroad across the river. You may see one of the 45 or so trains that pass this way daily.

This cache should be out of the way of most muggles, but all the same, please try to be careful replacing the cache.
