Royalston is a small rustic country town in Massachusetts, best known for its water falls and its natural surroundings. The first settlers of six families came to Royalston in 1762. Many families followed them shortlly after. The town has several old cemeteries from which a lot of history can be gained from learning more about the persons interred there. Many of the original settlers rest in these old cementeries. Several who served in the Revolutionary War, war of 1812 and the Civil War.
Although the old cemeteries are suppose to be under perpetual care these historical sites seem to be forgotten. One in particular Gale and Gates Cemetery seems to be lost and forgotten. The access to it is up an old logging road that runs off Bliss Hill Road. The entrance to the cemetery is not marked and easy to miss. When visiting there one must wonder how they ever got the casket up there. Two of the last persons to be interred there was our grandfather in 1963 and grandmother back in 1986. Sadly their caskets were taken up the old logging road in a dump truck. Most of the stones date back to the 1700's through the 1800's.
