Geocache Description:

From Salesian Cemetery (see parking coordinates) a short walk will bring you to The Grotto, a cave-like shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary that was used by the students at the Salesian School.

There is not much left of the Salesian School in Goshen, NY, the original mansion and water tower have been torn down and all that remains are their foundations.  Originally, the grounds of this cemetery and neighboring Salesian Park were owned by one David Haight who built a mansion there sometime in the mid-1800s.  Haight passed away in 1876 and the property was eventually purchased by the Salesian Fathers who turned it into a Catholic High School Seminary.

The history of the Salesian School is both varied and mysterious.  In a 1982 interview, George Carlin recounted being sent to "The Brothers...  That's what they called this parochial school up in Goshen, NY."  He was kicked out of the school some time later after telling some of his fellow students that he had heroin.  More spookily... on the night of August 9, 1964, 9-year-old Paul Ramos, Jr. fell to his death from the roof of the school.  At the time of the investigation the death was ruled an accident, however, in 2003, after allegations of abuse at the school were uncovered, the case was re-opened by the Goshen Police as a murder case; a reexamination of the evidence points to Ramos having been thrown off the roof.  To this date, Ramos' death remains unsolved.  Many claim his spirit roams the grounds of the school.

But you will not likely feel his presence at The Grotto, in fact, just the opposite.  Sometimes referred to as Our Lady of Lourdes Grottos, these man-made, cave-like shrines commemorate the alleged apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes, France.  Looking around, it is easy to see where the Blessed Virgin's statue once stood.  According to former students of the School, The Grotto is where the seminarians began their night rosary prayers, and while I am not a religious or even spiritual person, by any stretch of the imagination, it seems a fitting place to do so.

Before I tell you about the cache itself, please bear in mind that it is located on the grounds of a cemetery.  As such, please respect the sanctity of the place.  Feel free to look around the burial plots but keep in mind that the cache is not located near any of them.  Also, please do not cache at nigh; the cemetery is closed from dusk till dawn.

Now.... the actual cache is a rather unique cylindrical container hidden within The Grotto, but beneath about 5 feet of dirt and rocks (do not fear, unlike the nearby school, the grotto is structurally sound) and as such, an accurate reading of the location was not possible.  Instead, the posted coordinates will bring you to within about 20 feet of the actual location. Once your reach GZ it will be an obvious find, just head straight to the altar and you should have the container in hand with only a brief search.  You may need/want a small flashlight.  Cache can hold geocoins and small trackables and trade items.  FTF gets a Micro Cache Starter Kit with two micro caches and four write-in-the-rain logs (let me know where you hide them!).

As always, good luck, and happy caching!
