Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the former property of the Bridgeburg Shipyards. From 1903 to 1907, the current marina and Cairns Crescent site were owned and operated privately, by the Canadian Shipbuilding Company.

The south boulevard of the Niagara Parkway was completed in 1911, and when the shipyard was in operation, traffic was rerouted around it, creating what is now known as Cairns Crescent. In 1957, NPC acquired this shipyard property and a small boat launch was established in the vicinity a year later. The present day marina site was constructed by Niagara Parks in 1968.

Although this area has not been developed much in the last century, I was unable to locate any ruins of the former shipyards. It is hard to imagine this area being a bustling hub of shipbuilding along the Niagara River, but one could imagine the glory of shutting down the parkway and re-routing traffic along Cairns Crescent to launch a newly built vessel into the river.

Cache is a small lock n lock.

Have fun and happy caching!
