Geocache Description:

On the Water of Leith Walkway and the John Muir Way this historic bridge and it's romantic gatehouse on the edge of saughton Park are well worth a visit.

The current bridge replaces a magnificent triple arch stone bridge which gave access to Saughton Hall, then a country house, miles form the City of Edinburgh.

Highland drovers watered their cattle here prior to taking them to market. The name Saughton comes from 'sauch' meaning willow, latin "salix", Scottish Gaelic "saileach" which still grow next to the river.  The highlanders would use therse willows to weave items which they would sell in Edinburgh, things like fishtraps, baskets and creels.
