Geocache Description:

(This murder mystery cache series is done in multiple parts for both an epic feel of solving a mystery and most importantly, more smileys!  The series will contain traditional, multi, puzzle, letterbox, and challenge caches.  After the first cache, the following caches may be done in any order.)

One of these caches was the crime scene for the murder of Mark Well.  You should visit each cache and look for evidence that will help discover which location was the crime scene.  This will help us decide which of the suspects had visited the location and narrow down our list of suspects.

About Port Byron

Just 3 miles upriver from Interstate 80 where it crosses the Mississippi River you’ll find the quiet little village of Port Byron, Illinois.  What is it about Port Byron? Well… the pace is a little slower, the people a little friendlier, and the river.  It’s a great place to visit and a great place to call home.  This is where you’ll find real small town living at its’ best. Port Byron is 20 minutes away from the Quad Cities, a major metropolitan area with all the amenities you could ask for.  If you find yourself in the mood for a weekend in the big city, we’re only 150 miles East of Chicago, 260 miles North of St. Louis and 195 miles Southwest of Milwaukee.

Port Byron is located on The Great River Road, a National Scenic Byway recognized by the United States Department of Transportation for its archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational, and/or scenic qualities.

If you’re a local you know how special the Port Byron community is.  If you’re planning a visit, be sure to interact with the Mississippi River in some way during your time here.  Take a rest along the river’s edge and see ducks, geese, gulls, pelicans, herons and so much more wildlife.  In the Summertime there are always boats on the river.  Canoes, fishing boats, runabouts, cruisers and the huge tow-boats pushing barges full of cargo -  they all use the Mississippi River and pass by Port Byron.  You might also see a paddlewheeler cruising to St. Louis or Minneapolis or the Riverboat Twilight on one of its’ many trips to Dubuque.

The Great River Trail runs right through our downtown area and is utilized by thousands of bicyclists, runners and walkers.  Be sure and take a picture of Will B. Rolling, ( a 2014 Eddy Award winner) our 30′ tall statue of a rider perched atop his Penny-farthing.

Bring your clubs and enjoy a round of golf.  Port Byron is home to one of the best golf courses in the area, Byron Hills.  This scenic, pristine course offers 18 holes of  challenging golf. Measuring 6,465 yards from the Championship tees with a par of 71.

Don’t miss our main event of the Summer – The Great River Tug Fest.  The only event of its’ kind in the country.  The 3 day festival includes one of the best fireworks displays you’ll ever see on Friday night and on Saturday the Mississippi River is closed to all traffic and the 2400 foot rope is pulled across the river.  That’s when the teams of 20 compete to see who can bring home the Alabaster Eagle trophy along with bragging rights for the year.

Description of Container and Location:

The cache is a small size camouflage plastic container with swag to start.  There is also  laminated clues inside the cache.  You should copy this information or take pictures, but do not take the laminated clue from the cache.  They need to stay in the cache for the next investigator.  There is a pen and log book in the container.  The log book is double bagged for protection.  Please, be a good cacher and make sure the log is protected from the elements by double bagging it.

**For the first eight cachers who find this cache, there is an additional clue for you to take if you choose to.  This clue is key to finding one of our missing suspects.  The clues will only be revealed under certain circumstances.  Please, use the honor system and only take one clue per cacher who finds this cache.  Also, please do not try to decrypt the other clues besides the one you take.  If you do choose to take one of the eight clues, I am asking that you use the decrypted clue as part of your on-line log when you log this cache.  You can include this clue in your log however you would like.  You can be sneaky and hide it within your words if you like.  If you would like to make it easier for other cachers, you can have your clue be in bold print.  It is, however, completely up to you how you display the clue in your log.
