Geocache Description:

Where: Snug Harbor Rd (east) and Richmond Terrace, Staten Island New York 10310

When: Sunday August 24th 9am - Noon

What: CITO Event / Pebble Beach Clean up

How: Take the S40 Bus from the Staten Island Ferry, ride a bike or take advantage of plenty of on street parking

Why:

1- to have fun while earning your Nature Lovers souvenir (the real way! not the Earth Cache way lol)

2- There is a memorial located here for a fallen Eagle Scout from my Troop. He passed away at the age of 18 in 2011. Others and I try to keep this place clean. We know people come to visit the memorial often. The tide brings in a lot of trash here. And some landscaping is needed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is not in Snug Harbor but rather the shore line below Richmond Terr. The tides bring in a lot of trash and myslef and other try to keep the area clean.
The land is owned by the NY Park Department and they have drop off trash bags and some gloves for us to use. We will be leaving all the bags and larger trash items right on the side walk and they do a special pick up for us later in the day.
I will be providing refills of water and Gatorade for all participants these are in big jugs so you need to bring a bottle to refill. I also recommend you bring your own gloves. Dress in Long pants with boots. Be prepared for Poison Ivy, it’s not bad here but it is present.
Please RSVP here so we can plan out the Geocaching competitions and swag better.
Goe-Competitions & Geo-Fun at the CITO:
  1. First and foremost, we will all have fun collecting trash! Lol
  2. CITO’s Official Log Book: in the log book, please sign and write and draw anything you would like, but also include, how far you traveled from your home locations to attend the CITO! This can be found on the CITO page from you home computer. There will be an “Official Geocache” water bottle filled with Geocaching essentials for the farthest traveled! If you are traveling in a group and you all win, you can split the contents among your selves.
  3. Group Photo : at 11:30am we will all meet up on the Street next to the pile of trash for a Group Photo! This will be included in the CITOs page and will be submitted to the Local paper, The Staten Island Advance.
  4. Geo-Hunt! : For after the CITO is over; Scouts who are working on the Geocaching Merit Badge have places several temperate Geocaches with in the clean-up area! Feel free to stay after and spend some time looking for these and take some swag! If you take an item you like, you do not need to replace it but only take one item per person per cache. Hidden among these temporary caches will be un-activated travel bugs, and 7sofA Patches and this events official Geo-Coin (TB5QBDR)! If you find all 5 temporary caches you will be entered into a raffle for the second “official geocaching” water bottle filled with caching necessities!
  5. Before and After the CITO :Don’t forget to find some local caches! If you are not from Staten Island, make a day of it! Do you like FTFs? There might be a few FTF opportunities in the area early in the morning before the CITO! Non-Caching ideas: The Snug Harbor Cultural Center, SI Botanical Gardens, The Children's Museum and more are just across the street! !
CITO Event Recap:
Thank you so much to everyone who showed up and make this event a huge success! This was my first time hosing a Geocaching event so I was not sure what to expect and I could not be happier with the outcome. Over 20 people showed up; many of whom I have never meet before (thou I know there caches lol)
We collected over 50 large bags of trash! Shoved clear the greenway path, lined the foot trail with drift wood and constructed a new bench by the memorial! I did not expect to accomplish as much as we did today!
I hope everyone had fun with the FTFs, and the Temporary Caches, the Raffles and competitions.
Farthest Travel distance went to : abweiss1 and StarChildC who drove up from south NJ over 99 miles from their home!
Temporary Cache Raffle went to: DawnAIC for finding all 5 caches and winning the random drawing!
