Geocache Description:

A scenic picnic area. The scenery is some of the most beautiful in southern Illinois.  I wanted to place this cache so visitors can experience some of the breathtaking views we have to offer.

Parking is very close to GZ.

Cache has been mugged multiple times. I have since changed from a regular to an evil micro. There currently is no trackable in the cache, nor will there ever be due to its size.

About Bald Knob Cross: The base of the cross is 1,034 feet above sea level and overlooks the Shawnee National Forest. Originally completed in 1963 with a restoration completed in 2010, the cross itself stands 111 feet tall, is 22 feet square at the base, 16 feet square at the top and its arms extend 63 feet horizontally. The exterior white panels covering the cross are 4-inch architectural flat insulated metal panels while the base portion is covered in granite approximately 4-inches thick. The structure sits on a foundation of 730 tons of reinforced concrete that goes down 20 feet to bedrock. The steel framework weighs 170 tons. Each of the four sides of the cross have a word inscribed into the granite: Peace, Hope, Faith, Charity.

Take a drive to get closer and get a better view of this great structure.

Original contents include a log sheet, ink pen, path tag, Ralph Dunn "Good Luck" coin, 5 peso coin, plastic army men, plastic frog, plastic gems.

Congrats to tripp2cache on the FTF!
