At GZ you should be looking down at the back of a group of buildings that were originally tanneries build in the late 1890's & part of the industrial area known as Blubber Hollow. The front of this complex is on Proctor Street. Just across the street on the corner of Proctor and Boston St. was the Korn Leather Factory where, on June 25, 1914 an explosion occurred and a fire raged out of control and burned a huge portion of the city of Salem. On that fateful day, the winds happened to be blowing in a southeasterly direction and carried the fire away from these buildings, and while much of the city of Salem was ravished by fire, these buildings survived. They are some of Salem’s last remaining timber frame factories from the turn of the 20th century.

7/12/19 The huge tree that originally contained this cache was cut down. The new and different cache is still off the walkway, but now much closer to the street.
8/1/23 I have placed this closer to the fire hydrant - away from the walkway & the neighbors
