BBWB #23: Jerusalem Arch Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

bevandbarry: Bridge works still heavily fenced off. Looks like it could be a long time. So sadly archiving. Was a good way to remember this old bridge but time moves on.

Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Bridges of Whitchurch Series. We noticed a while ago that we have more than our fair share and they would create some good hiding places. Some of these can be done as cache and dash or as some nice circular walks in and around the town. Please park responsibly and take care crossing any roads. This is the 23rd in the series and can be done as part of an approx 3 1/2 mile walk around the North and Eastern side of Whitchurch (Loop #3). Could also be Park and Walk. Leaving BBWB #22, walk down Town Mill Lane towards London Road. At the end of the lane is Paviers Bridge. This was the original location for #23 but it was too close to 24. As kids we used to paddle in the river here but it is far too overgrown now. There was a shop on the corner called Paviers. We can't remember what they used to sell, maybe hardware but this is where the bridge got it's name. So... as we couldn't do Paviers... we found another interesting bridge. This is hopefully not too far of a diversion for the ardent cacher. From Paviers bridge turn left and go down London Street for approx 50M then cross the road and go right at 'The Lynch'. Just past the old 'County Police Station' (built 1862) on the left are some steps up. There are 36 if you count the top one. At the top of the steps turn left, walk 30M and the footpath to the bridge is on the right. If you can't do steps there is another way from a bit further down London Street coming up a gentler slope. Jerusalem Arch was once in the grounds of Bere Hill House - now a nursing home. It has been suggested that Jerusalem Arch was originally built so that the Portal family did not have to suffer the view of their mill-workers walking to work to Freefolk and Laverstoke. The bridge has been there for at least 80 years as far as we can make out and crosses over the footpath and at one time led from the house on the left to some tennis courts on the right. The footpath used to be a favourite route for the kids at the top of town to get to the river near #22 where we could go swimming after school. When we placed the cache there were several Peacock butterflies camped out on the ceiling under the bridge. There is a lot of tree cover so GPS may fluctuate. Beware of muggles and dog walkers. Please take notice of any "Private" signs and do not wander into any places you shouldn't. We enjoy reading logs, and would love hearing about the adventures you have when finding caches.
