The 16 acre housing estate facing the Promenade was once the impressive site of Penrhos College for girls (founded 1880) until it merged with Rydal School for Boys in 1995. The site was finally closed in 1999
During World War II, the Penrhos College site was taken over by the government for Ministry of Food use. The Duke of Devonshire, anticipating that schoolgirls would make better tenants than soldiers, offered Chatsworth House for the use of the school (Hence the naming of Chatsworth Close)
Penrhos College celebrated it's centenary in 1980 with a visit from thr Prince of Wales who opened the new centenary building.
The school was was finally closed in 1999 and demolished and a modern housing estate built on the former site.
A tower and weathervane from the College buildings have been saved and can be
seen situated in the grounds.
We have spent many a day playing on the green and thought it would be an ideal location for our first Cache.
Cache contains a pencil, log and some goodies.
