This little copse hides a secret, so don't fall in. You will find these ponds all over the lanscape where there was extensive arable farming. They were dug in the 19th century to provide a supply of water for the ploughing engines (semi-stationary steam engines working in pairs pulling a large reversible plough back and forth across the field). If they were not dug, water would have to be brought up in tankers as these ploughing engines consumed a lot of water,
Most of the year this particular pond is dry since the clay base has fissured, but it does have water during the winter, and the area around bcomes very boggy; therefore decent boots are needed in winter. Those intrepid geocachers who have ventured this far will realise that the terrain is not that friendly, and either a pony or Shank's Pony is the best form of transport (recently the surface has been graded in the worst places, but we will see what the winter brings). The cache is about 4 metres into the wood, NE corner, and the access will be fairly obvious if you are near the coordinates - no crawling required, only a little scratchy. Please return as found.
