Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache placed in the grounds of Fort Hill park. The cache itself is a small, black cylinder. Inside the cache is a a pencil and logbook, sorry not much room for trinkets!

Fort Hill park is located along Connaughton road. It is a relatively quiet park as it is not well known and perfect for an evening stroll. It is especially beautiful on a clear, sunny eveing as it offers views of Sligo bay, Knocknarea and Benbulben. Fort Hill gets its name from an earthen ringfort which was named 'Ráth Dá BhrÍotóg' which translates to 'ringfort of the two stuttering women' or 'ringfort of the two British women'. Overtime it was modified from an enclosed farmstead to an earthen bastion in 1646 because of the 1641 rebellion. It was of high strategic importance because of its location atop Sligo's highest hill (42m) from which it could guard the pass from Connaught to west Ulster. It was also used to defend Sligo harbour. This cache is a 1 terrain and difficulty rating to allow beginners to enjoy it from the Geocaching Intro app. It is NOT wheelchair accessible.
