Herlev har haft socialdemokratisk enevælde siden 1. april 1970.
Fra 1970 til 1996 med Ib Juul som borgmester, fra 1996 til 2011 med Kjeld Hansen som bormester og fra 2011 med Thomas Gyldal Petersen som borgmester.
I 2014 sidder Socialdemokratiet på 14 af de 19 stole, der findes i byrådssalen.
