William Howard Taft was President of the United States from 1909 to 1913. His presidency concentrated on civil service reform, the strengthening of the Interstate Commerce Commission, the improvement of the postal service's performance, and the passage of the Sixteenth Amendment. However, he is chiefly remembered as being America’s fattest president, weighing in at a hefty 335-340 pounds (that’s about 24 stone to us Brits).
An often told (and probably untrue) story about Taft is that he was so large that he once got stuck in the White House bathtub and had to be pried out by two men. It is true that he had an extra-large tub installed (7 foot long, 41 inches wide) to accommodate his bulk – it was so big that four normal-sized men could easily fit in it at the same time.
