White House - East Wing Traditional Cache

The White House's two-storey East Wing serves as office space for the First Lady and her staff, including the White House Social Secretary, the White House Graphics and Calligraphy Office, and correspondence staff. The East Wing also includes the White House theatre, the visitors' entrance, and the East Colonnade.

The wing was built during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909) as an entrance for formal and public visitors. Its main feature was the long cloakroom for storing the coats and hats of the visitors. It was significantly expanded in 1942, primarily to cover the construction of an underground bunker, now the Presidential Emergency Operations Center. During this renovation, the cloakroom became the movie theatre, and later renovations added further offices.
