English version:
All North America was under 2000 to 4000 meters of ice. This icecap was named Laurentidian Inlandsis. During their retreat 12000 years ago, the Inlandsis has broken in two parts. One of this part has flown to the Labrador area and the other to the Hudson Bay. Between them, these parts have left the Harricana moraine,
During 1847, William Edmond Logan who was the Canadian Geological Commission chief has submitted the first descriptions of the forms and marks left by glaciers on the Temiscaming lake shore.
Logan has noted that there were three kinds of marks :
- macroforms : big marks that we see on aerial pictures, many meters long (drumlins, moraine, eskers);
- middleforms : marks in the rock, some meters long, visible on the field (striations, fluffy rocks, dissymmetric rocks);
- microforms : abrasive or friction marks which are centimeters or milimeters long (cressent forms, grooves, round files, nailheads).
To have the permission to log this earthcache, you'll have to answer to these question:
On the site, you’ll see some forms. What kind of forms or marks left by the glaciers are on the site?
- Describe the forms visible on the bed rock (lenght, width, depth,...);
- orientation, in degrees, one compare to the other;
- One of these marks is filled with some substance. What color is it?
With your log, you can joint a picture of your discovery if you want to.
Also, as the Harricana moraine is at about 10 km north of the site, are the ices retreated to the Labrador or to the Hudson Bay? Please, email me your answer and wait for my agreement before to log your discovery.
There are planty of parking near from the earthcache site, no fee to pay, it is a municipal park, Poirier park.
