Костел святого Йосипа / St. Joseph Cathedral
[UA] Перше, що впадає в око при в'їзді у Підгірці - це шикарний бароковий костел святого Йосипа.
[EN] Very first thing that catches one's eyes at the arrival to Pidhirtsi is this once magnificent Cathedral, that could be a hallmark in any European city.
Built in the Italian Baroque style, the Exaltation of the Cross Cathedral (aka St. Joseph) has been built by Waclaw Rzewuski as a family sanctuary. The Cathedral is decorated with the 14-column portico, decorated with 8 sculptures of saints (after Rzewuski family). Only 7 sculptures did preserved. Apparently, during the IIWW a sniper was hiding behind the eighth sculpture. Don't know whether the sniper has survived, the sculpture did not.
To the sides of the Cathedral, there are figures of Virgin Mary and St. Joseph. The Cathedral is opened for services, which are currently run by a Catholic Church, which is trying to maintain the building the best their resources allow them (at the left side of the entrance, there is a donation box for restoration).
Once beautiful, now completely neglected linden alley, connects the Cathedral and the Castle. The alley was a part of an elaborated Italian-style garden (truly a "gone with the wind" scene).
