Geocache Description:

10. Catch Can where whiskey collects. One-gallon Mason jars are preferred.

Although illegal whiskey is commonly referred to as "moonshine", it is also known by a number of different names including "hooch", "rotgut", "blockade", "white lightning" and "brushwhiskey".

Moonshine has been made with a number of different grains but the majority of grains used are corn and barley. To make it, the grain is fermented with sugar and water for a specific period of time. This is called mash and is the main ingredient in any type of moonshine.

Although distilling alcohol has been practiced for centuries, moonshine became most popular during prohibition. Then, with the inability to purchase alcohol legally in many different countries, people began to brew moonshine in their homes.

After prohibition, moonshine was not brewed as commonly, however, many people still brew moonshine in their homes. Moonshine is a raw flavored alcohol that can be extremely potent and could even lead to health problems due to its potency.

While moonshine is still illegal to brew, many people today still enjoy making moonshine in small quantities and it has continued to be an art that people enjoy.
