From the Troy or Libby, MT area, take highway 56 south off of US Rte 2. The intersection is near Troy at the rest stop/weigh station. After topping the hill, as the road curves to the right, there will be a sign for the Old Hwy 2 trail; turn left and follow the road to the parking area. (This road is before reaching Savage Lake.)
The Old Hwy 2 trail is an easy walk and both scenic and informative. To reach the cache, go past the Baumgartner Mtn Trail and it a short distance take the Shannon Lake trail, to your right. There is also a bench at this location if some of the group wants to wait.
The cache is about 2/3rds of the way to Shannon Lake. The trail is steep, but the distance short. The cache is located on a flat plateau area along the left side of the trail as you proceed toward the lake.
Cache is a large plastic jar. A trackable was left in the original cache. If you have come as far as the cache, go on to Shannon Lake and hike to our around the small lake.
