Geocache Description:

Kersal Moor consists of 8 hectares of moor land in Salford, it is designated a Local Nature Reserve and a Site of Biological Importance, there is evidence of activity during the Neolithic period has been discovered here.

Kersal Moor is one of many Fluvioglacial ridges that formed along the Irwell Valley during the melting of the glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age, typically for this type of land form which are called drumlins and are either oval or an elongated hill believed to have been formed by the streamlined movement of the glacial ice slabs, the subsoil is composed of sand mixed with coarse gravel.

It has been described as a deposit of sharp sand, parted with layers of gravel composed of Azoic, Paleozoic and Triassic rocks, this deposit is overlaid with  a thin top soil supporting a range of mosses, heathers, grasses, ferns, common broom, gorse and some trees.

The land falls away to the North, ending with 2 Drumlin - shaped hills on the northern edge of the moor, which was formed by sediment from meltwater of the receding glaciers in a process known as sedimentry fluting.

To Log this Earthcache please contact me using the link at the top of this page and tell me what you think the answers to these questions are:

1. How long are these Drumlins?

2. Describe how the sand feels like is it rough or smooth?

3. Using your GPRs what is the elevation at GZ ?

4. Explain which direction do you think that the ice was flowing?

As an optional task it would be nice if you could upload a picture of yourself or GPRs at the site.
