You used to be able to wander further in, but the elusive and protected Great Crested Newt was found to live in the marshy land beyond the fence, so make sure you stay on the right side!
The Great Crested Newt is the UK's largest newt species and belongs to the salamander family and class of amphibians and although they are of least concern conservation-wise, are decreasing due to habitat destruction and fragmentation, and have some legal protection (so beware!).
