Geocache Description:

Romeo:

Red Pig – Still Living on the Edge

Or

Red Pig’s Chances are Dashed at the Ridge

Please be sure to snap the lid back on tightly.

Sign the Log, Leave the Hog.

Red Pig wanted to mend her ways.  She heard about a spa-n-breakfast joint out at Chance Ridge and had high hopes.  She arrived, pregnant with her most recent litter from her nefarious activities, about to give birth once again, and needing a pen (a sty), a good wallow, an excellent vet and good medical care.  She arrived, only to be told there was no room at the inn, no pens, no open stalls, no available corrals, not even an open pasture, all because word had gotten out that she might be visited by “those geocaching humans” at any and all hours of the day and night.

Red Pig was desperate.  She headed over to the Elkhorn Animal Hospital hoping for a hand-out and a night’s rest; again she was told, “We can’t have and don’t want traffic through our parking lot!”  Red was fairly certain they turned her away due to her history and reputation, or maybe they just don’t take care of pigs there… cats & dogs, you say?  Harumph.

Dismayed, Red Pig wandered about, moving slowly, carrying her many piglets, hoping she could find a soft spot to hide out and wait for visitors.  At last, Red Pig located a tree along a fence just outside a nearby NRD, not far from the Ridge where she’d originally hoped to take her chances at changing her luck, her fortune, her future, and give birth to the Pig of all pigs.  She’d been down on her luck for so long she wasn’t sure what it might be like bearing a Son or Daughter Pig that might have a better future than her past.  She’d been kidnapped, held for ransom, puzzled and even drawn on; she’d even been a potential candidate for Thanksgiving Dinner!  All she wanted was a good home and a vet who loved her, if only for a while.  She’d been determined that if she could have these piglets in a safe place she’d change her ways and stay in one place, but, alas, that was not to be.  Red is now hiding out at the edge of the drive down to a good wallowing spot near the River.  You can get to her day or night, as she’s not really on NRD property, but she’s not really off the property, either… she’s on the boundary.  Just as her life has been lived on the edge all these months and even years, Red’s hideout is on the edge.

Note:

After I dropped Red Pig off (she requested a lift and I was nearby at the time), I found a scrap of paper on the floor of my vehicle. It appears to be a draft for a singles ad! As best I could make out, it reads as follows:

“SRS (Single Red Sow), Pregnant Mother of many, Experienced, Looking for Strong, Secure, Stable, Sweet Boar. Must have own sty, prefer built-in wallow. Must be able to fight off accosters ruffians. No Wolves in Sheep’s Pig’s clothing.”

If there’s no traffic, you can park and run and grab and sign, but that's probably not a great idea.  If there is, you’ll have to park at the NRD and walk up the hill (or just do it for the exercise) or park along the street (the entrance has a no-parking sign) and walk down the outside or inside of the fence line.  The NRD area is open April 1 through October 31 and is open daily from 6am-10pm.  It’s not a long walk… depending on where you park (longer if you park at the NRD parking lot or bike in).

This qualifies as a "JOE" (Just Off Exit) cache; it's less than 1/2 mile from the Skyline exit from Rt. 6 (West Dodge Road).  Skyline is Very busy, so please proceed with caution and attention.  It's not really legal to park next to GZ; you do so at your own risk.  It is legal to park at the NRD parking lot (bottom of the drive) during open season and walk up the hill (it's about 1/2 mile) and back.  You may also park on the side road (Daylily Circle), but not on the grass directly in front of the NRD (There's a no parking sign).  There may be construction (there is as of the placing of this cache) of houses along here... again, please be careful/cautious!

Happy Caching and Bring Your Own Pen!
