Geocache Description:

You are about to embark on a journey to Haven. Haven the comic book anyways. Stored in this cache is the first issue of the comic book Haven published by Making Comics Studios. This was published in 2005 by me and a group of very talented creators out of sheer love for the medium. Now I get to combine two of my favorite things – the world of comic books and the thrill of the geocache. I wish to share both with you.

Haven began in 2003. It was a story I’d been working on in my head for years. On my bucket list was to get that idea to paper and produce it in some capacity. At the time (with the power of the internet) I was corresponding with a variety of talented artists and inkers and colorists (and so on) through email, message boards and chat. I’d share my ideas with the comic book community and as planting a seed the idea of Haven began to grow. A team was formed and the book began.

None of us had ever published a comic book before. We all had day jobs and were regular Joes and Janes. It was an interesting learning experience. And of course never doing anything easy we weren’t going to just publish one book, but rather a three part, full colored mini-series. That may not mean a lot to people who don’t understand how these books are put together. It makes them harder to produce and certainly more expensive to publish.

We finished issue one in 2005 and I paid to get five thousand copies made. The only game in town to get a comic book distributed was through a place called Diamond. I figured once we had a product completed and in hand distribution would be the easy part. Nope. No way. Didn’t happen. We sold some of our books online and some at conventions, but the majority of them still sit in my basement screaming to be let out into the world.

Three years ago my buddy introduced me to this little thing called geocaching. You may have heard of it. I became an addict. It didn’t take long for me to think about my lonely books in the basement and how cool it would be to get them out into the world through this awesome treasure hunt.

So I wish you well in your hunt. I hope it is something unique for you. The book may not be your cup of tea, but I hope you appreciate it for what it is.
