Geocache Description:

This cache is not at the published co-ordinates. To find it you will have to solve a puzzle to determine its final location. At the same time, you may learn more about the world of philately.

I was introduced to the hobby of stamp collecting, while still at school. At that time many children had small inexpensive collections, and I recall time spent comparing and swopping items with friends and trying to see if one could complete an interesting set. Nowadays, with fewer people actually writing and sending letters, and with franked envelopes replacing commercial mail, there are fewer and fewer opportunities for one to find and accumulate a variety of postally used stamps.

Yet the hobby still survives, and is known by its more formal name “Philately”, which refers to the study of stamps, postal history and other related items. The postage stamp was invented by Rowland Hill who devised a pre-paid postal delivery system to replace the complicated, confusing, and fraud-ridden postal system inherited from Britain's pre-industrial age. The first "penny black" stamp was issued in 1840, and since then, the technology has been adopted worldwide. As early as 1860, collecting postage stamps had become a popular hobby in Europe and America as well as in Britain.
Philately has also been called the “hobby of kings” because so many famous individuals have been avid collectors – including King George V, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Rainer of Monarco; US President Franklin Roosevelt; entertainers John Lennon and Freddy Mercury; and finally tennis star Maria Sharapova.

This then, is my tribute to the humble postage stamp.
