Tot aan het begin van de 17de eeuw maakte het niemand echt uit waar de de Drentse noordoostgrens precies liep. Het gebied was destijds een onbewoond moeras en had geen economische waarde. Dat veranderde echter toen de het veen werd ontgonnen waarmee de Veenkoloniën ontstonden. Daarom werd de grens in 1615 op verzoek van de Staten van beide provincies uitgezet door Johan de la Haye (namens Drenthe) en naamgever Johan Sems (namens Groningen). Op 2 maart 1615 was de kaart gereed en werd dit deel van de grens probleemloos vastgelegd. Dat gold overigens niet voor het zuidelijker gelegen deel rond Ter Apel want daar werd nog een aantal jaren over gedebatteerd.
Bijna 400 jaar later plaatsten wij een Geocache op deze plek. Vanaf deze lokatie kun je niet alleen een heel eind Drenthe in kijken maar aan de Groningse kant valt je vast de spoorlijn op. Deze lijn werd in de jaren 20 van de 20ste eeuw in gebruik genomen maar heeft slechts tot 1935 personen vervoerd. Tot het begin van de jaren 80 is het nog in gebruik geweest als goederenlijn. Tegenwoordig is het een museumspoorlijn en met een beetje geluk zie je nog een trein van de STAR rijden. Achter de spoorlijn bevindt zich onze straat, de Parksingel, met huizen uit het eind van de jaren 30 en gebouwd aan de rand van het Julianapark dat tijdens de crisis in het kader van de werkverschaffing werd aangelegd.
Parkeren kan aan beide zijden van de Ploegerslaan dus aan de Drouwenerstraat en aan de Buinerstraat (zie waypoints). Op laatstgenoemde lokatie zijn twee tankstations.

Looking at the map of the Netherlands, you will certainly notice that the border between the Groningen and Drenthe provinces follows an almost straight line for nearly 30 km. In the vicinity of Stadskanaal this border (the Semsline) exactly coincides with a dirt road (Ploegerslaan). Therefore it is possible to walk exactly on the border for about a mile.
Up until the 17th century no one really cared about the exact location of the border between Drenthe and Groningen since the area mainly consisted of economically worthless swamps. That all changed when the wetlands were drained to form the agricultural Veenkoloniën. Therefore both provinces ordered Johan de la Haye (on behalf of Drenthe) en Johan Sems (on behalf of Groningen) to measure out the exact location of the border which was named after Sems. On march 2nd 1615 the map was finished and this part of the border remained undisputed. This, however, was not the case for the southernmost part of the Semsline
Nearly 400 years later we placed a geocache on this place. From here you'll have a wide view into Drenthe. On the Groningen-side of the border you can see old train tracks. This was constructed in the 20's of the last century and was only used for public transport until 1935. It remained in use for freight until the 1980's but is now a museumline. With a bit of luck you might see a steam engine from the STAR Railway. Our street is behind the tracks and consists of houses that were build in the late 30's, just before the war.
Parking is possible on both sides of the Ploegerslaan , so at the Drouwenerstraat and at the Buinerstraat (waypoints provided). In the cach you will find plenty of space for Travelbugs and Geocoins, provided that the maximum diameter is 6cm or less. On toip you will find a smaller container with the logbook.
