Geocache Description:

Yet another cache for the Whyalla Outdoor Adventures Series.

Whyalla Conservation Park

The entrance to the park is located on the Lincoln Highway (Port Augusta Road) 10kms north of the Whyalla Visitor Centre or you can use the Western entracne off the road that runs along the dump next to the speedway from the Iron Knob Road. The park is open from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, with free entry.

The landforms of the park are roughly divided into two regions - an eastern flat low lying plain, and a western section featuring a series of low hills rising to the 95m Wild Dog Hill sandstone outcrop in the north-western corner.

Wild Dog Hill is the most outstanding topographical feature of the park - its features and imposing profile making it a popular picnic location for local residents. Weathering has produced large cracks in the face which gives the hill its character. A visit to the hill at dusk or sunrise will reveal it at its best.

A walking trail leads to the top, giving a clear view of the park and surrounding areas. Interpretive markers line the route to help the visitor gain an understanding of the semi-arid vegetation. To walk the full length of the trail will take around half an hour.

The park is controlled by National Parks and Wildlife SA, but is maintained by the Friends of Whyalla Conservation Park.

Major tracks are suited to conventional vehicles, except after heavy rain. Not suitable for caravans.

Please remember:

  • Gas BBQ's only - no campfires.
  • The toilet at Wild Dog Hill caters for disabled persons, but there is limited water for hand washing.
  • Please keep to the identified tracks & walking trails - vehicles must stay on designated roadways.
  • Climbing on Wild Dog Hill rock face is prohibited to help preserve a very fragile & important environmental feature.
  • Normal National Parks & Wildlife SA regulations apply.
  • The park is at its best after rain.
  • No pets allowed.

This cache is located not far from the Western Entrance to the park. It is a small plastic container with a few swaps in it.

Thankyou to local geocacher fishingmad for the creation and placement of this cache.
