Geocache Description:

Parish Church of St Nicholas, Tresmeer.

The beautiful church consists of a chancery, nave and tower and sits in the quiet Cornish village of Tresmeer.

The registers have baptisms from 1625, marriages from 1574 and burials from 1675.

Originally the church was a small Norman chapel managed by the priors of Launceston. In 1294, the ‘Capella De Tresmoore was valued at 26 shillings and 8 pence. The early history of the church is mostly unknown. The buildings had fallen into disrepair by 1879 and plans were developed for a restoration costing £850. Some features of the old church were retained including the holy water stoup in the south porch, the triple lancet east window, the Celtic crosses, the Norman font, the piscina, the tower and the bells. From that point onwards it was known as St Nicholas.

The 3 bells of the church are particularly interesting. 2 are medieval (circa 1450) and have inscriptions which are not fully translated. They originated from Okehampton castle (the Courtney family) in the 14th century. They are historically important bells.  The two bells are leased to Okehampton museum where they have been carefully cleaned and restored. The third and largest bell is dated 1607 and is 27.5 inches diameter. No bells hang in the church now.

In 1995, the lead roof of the church was renewed.

The church is now up for sale and thus may not be accessable in the future. Hence the final coordinates are given below.p>

The cache is not at the above coordinates and can now be found at N 50° 39.622' W 4° 30.021'.
