The story of Kai Tak started in early 20th century when two businessmen Sir Kai Ho Kai and Au Tak formed the Kai Tak Land Investment Company to reclaim land in Kowloon Bay for development. The project was approved by the government in April 1914 and then Sir Kai passed away in July 1914. The 120-hectare Kai Tak Bund project was originally planned as a garden city residential area but eventually collapsed after the bankruptcy of the funding company. Afterwards, land was acquired by the government for use as an airfield. Later, Kai Tak Airport (IATA: HKG, ICAO: VHHH) was built and served as the international airport of Hong Kong from 1925 until 1998.
The airport at Kai Tak was relocated to Chek Lap Kok in July 1998. The relocation has offered a good opportunity for major development in the Metro Area. After years of planning and development, the government commissioned the Kai Tak Planning Review with “zero reclamation” as the starting point to carry out an extensive 3-stage Public Participation Programme in 2004.
In 10 August 2014, Kai Tak Runway Park, occupying 2.82 hectares and built at the tip of the former Kai Tak airport runway, is now open 24 hours daily.
The park has incorporated aviation elements in its design, such as the original yellow and black checkered pattern at the tip of the taxiway that once served as a visual reference for pilots during landing.
The runway was known as "Runway One-Three"/ "Runway Three-One" in the aviation industry and the numbers "13" and "31" have reappeared in the park.
Historic photos that commemorate the old airport form "Kai Tak Timeline", which introduces the history of the airport and plane-shaped benches are some other features of the park, managed by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department.
Other major facilities include a 270-metre-long waterfront promenade, a large lawn and an open plaza.
As this park is newly openly and I cannot assess its muggle level, please play special attention for the cache retrievel and reloading.
Bring your own pen, be stealthy and happy caching!
