Geocache Description:

Head from the village of Harlington down a leafy sloping lane toward The Bottoms, a.k.a. Harlington Vale.

The easy downhill walk to this cache will reap ripe rewards for the late summer forager, with blackberries, damsons and sloes to be gathered. We walked in sunshine and saw plenty of butterflies alongside us enjoying this quiet greenway. The path isn't a long one but from its head you can cross the road to pick up the Bunyan Trail - recommended in this area for the wonderful views and the history. John Bunyan, author of Pilgrim's Progress and Puritan evangelist, preached from beneath or within an oak tree close the other side of the Barton Road from GZ. The oak was chosen for his uncoventional pulpit as it was situated away from the eyes and ears of those who would prosecute him for content of his sermons. According to some accounts Bunyan stood within the tree as the hollow structure served to amplify his words, however it is likely that 300 years ago the tree was solid. Eventually Bunyan was arrested and sent to Bedford Gaol for 'field-preaching', he served a 12 year sentence. The oak tree is now dead and well-weathered but is still an impressive sight. A sapling oak was planted nearby by the botanist, David Bellamy, in 1988. The Bunyan Trail is a circular long distance path (70+ miles) that links notable Bunyan locations, running mostly in Bedfordshire with a small section briefly reaching over the border into Hertfordshire. The Bottoms are part of the Chiltern Cycleway route. It is possible to park in a small layby at the head of the lane. Take care if crossing the road to see Bunyan's Oak as there is no pavement and the road can be busy.
