La Fortezza Nuova si erge in mezzo ad un grande bacino d'acqua ed è collegata alla città tramite un piccolo ponte e da alcuni pontili mobili realizzati in anni recenti. La cortina muraria, sostanzialmente intatta, presenta una forma assai complessa, con tutti gli elementi tipici dell'architettura militare del tempo, quali i fianchi ritirati concavi, le cannoniere ad intaglio ed un rivellino molto pronunciato verso lo specchio d'acqua antistante. L'ingresso principale è protetto da un recinto difensivo sovrastato da caratteristiche torrette angolari: in origine qui era presenta un ponte levatoio, sostituito poi da un passaggio in muratura. Dal recinto, una galleria conduce al fianco ritirato del bastione ed ai piani superiori del baluardo, dove sono presenti i ruderi di numerosi edifici di servizio, oggi inseriti all'interno di un parco pubblico. Vi si trovava una chiesetta per la guarnigione, consacrata alla Concezione di Maria ed officiata dal cappellano fino al 1860. Attraverso un altro cortile interno, circondato da alte cortine fornite di feritoie, si accede, mediante una galleria, ad uno scalo che si affaccia ad una piccola darsena alla quale arrivavano via acqua i rifornimenti per la guarnigione. Fino ai primi anni del Novecento sul terrapieno al centro della fortezza era posizionato un cannone che veniva fatto sparare per annunciare il mezzogiorno. Ancora oggi all'interno della fortezza è possibile trovare il cannone, puntato verso la porta San Marco.

The New Fortress stands in the middle of a large body of water and is connected to the city by a small bridge and some drawbridges made in recent years. The curtain wall, substantially intact, has a very complex shape, with all the typical elements of military architecture of the time, such as the concave withdrawn hips, gunboats and a very pronounced slotted fortification towards the water.The main entrance is protected by a fence topped with characteristics defensive corner towers: originally presented here was a drawbridge, then replaced by a passage in the masonry. From the fence a tunnel leads to the side of the withdrawn bastion and to the upper floors of the bastion, where there are the ruins of numerous service buildings, today inserted into a public park.There was a church for the garrison, consecrated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary and officiated by the chaplain until 1860. From another courtyard surrounded by high curtains provided with slits, through a tunnel you can access for a stopover, that faces a small dock to which arrived via water supplies for the garrison.Until the early years of the twentieth century on the embankment in the center of the fortress was located a cannon that was made to shoot and announce the midday. Still inside the fortress you can find the cannon, pointed at the San Marco door.
