[DE] Seit etwa 80 Millionen Jahren wird die afrikanische Kontinentalplatte gegen die Europäische geschoben. An der Knautschzone entstanden die Alpen. Die markante geologische Grenze, die sogenannte Periadriatische Linie, verläuft von Südwesten durch das Marauntal, nördlich der Burg Eschenlohe vorbei, über Meran und Hirzer – Ifinger weiter durch das Pustertal nach Osten. Das Ultental liegt in diesem geologischen Grenzgebiet.
