A small, disco cache located on the Simonside range of hills in Northumberland.
The Simonside Hills lie within Northumberland National Park on the northern-most edge of Harwood forest and have beckoned walkers for years because of their wild and rugged beauty. The range dominates the skyline forming a dramatic southern backdrop to the middle reaches of the River Coquet. The climb up the hills to the top is rewarded with the whole panorama of the Cheviots to the north and from the top of Simonside itself the whole Northumbrian coastline is revealed, the spot of this cache offers great views of the Cheviots.
In Northumbrian folklore, the Duergar, a race of grim and scowling dwarves were said to live in these hills and would tempt lost and weary travellers to their doom... the CO accepts no responsibility for any Duergar related incidents whilst hunting for this cache.
The Simonside Hills are designated an area of Special Scientific Interest and thanks go to the Forestry Commission and Natural England who were gracious enough to allow us to place this cache here on the condition that Geocachers behave themselves! It takes 10 years for 1cm of peat to form, it is soft and vulnerable to wearing away underfoot. Heather moorland is home to lots of plants, animals and insects, so please think about this before straying off designated footpaths.
A favourite location for a day's walking or occasionally mountain biking too, we hope you enjoy the area as much as we do. The cache is disguised to fit in with it's surroundings, the location is a little tricky to get to so please take care and after signing the log, have a sit down and take the time to enjoy the amazing views!
DANGER: Please use your best judgement if the conditions are poor, for example the rock is wet/icy or high winds etc. The cache will be there for you to come back for another day.
