THE CHURCH
The Church of All Saints, Rotherfield Peppard is known to date from at least the first half of the 13th Century. A full list of Rectors from 1233 onwards can be seen in the nave. The church underwent major restoration by William Scott Champion in 1874, at which point the north aisle was added. The village itself is mentioned in Doomsday Book (1086) under the name ‘Redrefeld’ (meaning ‘cattle-lands').
The outer walls and tower are of flint with stone dressing. The roof is of slate. The nave and north aisle comprise four bays and three bays respectively. The timber-framed porch dates from 1908. Inside the church can be seen a round Romanesque font with cable moulding. The east window is flanked by Romanesque arches. The pointed chancel arch on Romanesque shafts with carved capitals is 13th Century. There are trefoil arched trusses to the nave, and a wood barrel vault to the chancel.
