Geocache Description:

Warning! The posted coordinates, while on a foot path, are near a sudden sheer cliff. It is NOT necessary to go near the cliffs edge and it is NOT recommended you try this at night. Park hours are sunrise to sundown anyway, but please pay attention to your surroundings and WATCH YOUR STEP!

Located in Dry Creek regional park. A splinter trail off of Old Ranch Terrace trail will take you to the location for the interesting and unique features of this earthcache. Dry Creek Regional park sits on top of the 74 mi (119 km) long Hayward Fault Zone.

A landslide, also known as a landslip, is a geological phenomenon that includes a wide range of ground movements, such as rockfalls, deep failure of slopes and shallow debris flows. Landslides can occur in offshore, coastal and onshore environments. Although the action of gravity is the primary driving force for a landslide to occur, there are other contributing factors affecting the original slope stability. Typically, pre-conditional factors build up specific sub-surface conditions that make the area/slope prone to failure, whereas the actual landslide often requires a trigger before being released.
At the posted coordinates you should be able to see a clear example how a landslide can effect the terrain of an area.

To log this Earthcache, send me an email with the following information. Please do not post the answers in your log (with the exception of #4).
1. What type of landslide is this? A Debris slide, Earth flow, Slump, or Rock slide?
2. Count the number of waves, or "Scarps" in the ground, from the top of the hill, to the bottom. A footpath will run between these waves, and their sizes vary from small to large. So I expect that answers will vary.
3. Landslides can be caused by a number of factors, acting together or alone. What factor or factors do you think caused this landslide?
4. (Optional) Currently there is a tree teetering on the cliffside hanging halfway over the edge. (Again, you should be able to see it plain as day without needing to get close to the edge.) I can imagine it's only a matter of time before that tree topples over. First person to visit GZ when that tree is no longer standing please mention it in your log. As I'd love to know when it finally does happen.
