“Yes, Maester!”
“As you know, we . . . Bolton! How many times do I have to tell you? You are not allowed to carve your initials into either your desk or your classmates!”
“But how else can we be sure our blades are sharp enough to . . .”
“Never mind your back talk! Now, as I was saying, we need to finish up the preparations for next week’s Harvest Festival. Remember: you represent your Houses, and will be judged accordingly. Greyjoy: can you and your sister help with the costumes for the pageant?”
“How many times do I have to say it? We do not sew costumes!”
“Fine, fine, you can be responsible for supplying the sausages for the dinner, then. Baratheon: you and your brothers submitted a design to the Centrepiece Competition. Is yours the Pegasus?”
“No, Maester: ours is the Fury!”
“I’m not sure a winged avenging angel sets the right tone . . . we’ll come back to that later. Next: Lannister? ”
“Yes, Maester! I was thinking that I could play a lion in the pageant. Would you like to hear me roar?”
“Actually, I was speaking to the taller Lannister boy. You still haven’t turned in the coins you owe for last week’s field trip. Get those to me soon; that’s a good lad. Now: Targaryen. You had an alternate suggestion for a centrepiece.”
“Yes, Maester. I was thinking that we could build a volcano over a cauldron, and load the cauldron with animal blood, and heat it up . . .”
“Why do all of your ideas involve blood and fire, Targaryen? (There’s something not quite right with that boy.) Okay, next . . . what’s this note on the floor? Who wrote this gibberish? . . . No one willing to admit it? Maybe I should get the Hound in here to ask you more directly? . . . Yes, Varys?”
“A little mouse told me something that might be of use to you, Maester.”
