Geocache Description:

This cache is accessible by boat on Loud Pond (an impoundment of the Au Sable River).

This location is part of the Huron National Forest.

Located on a small island. This cache can be accessed by either the North or South end of the island.

-- About the Area--

Fishing is prime along the Au Sable River. There are large and small mouth bass, rock bass, walleye, pike, blue gills, pan fish, pumpkin seed, carp, and more. The lower Au Sable River also has steelhead and salmon.

River dangers: Loud Pond is full of underwater hazards and has many shallow areas. Loud pond is dangerous to boat on with motor boats unless you know the pond very well. It does not have as clearly defined channel as the other ponds on the Au Sable River. There are numerous underwater deadheads (logs and stumps) which are difficult to see. Some of these come right up to within one or two inches under the surface of the water. Please use extra caution when motor boating in this pond.

Even though this pond can be difficult to navigate, for people who are not familiar with Loud Pond, it is also extraordinarily beautiful at the west end. There is an abundance of wildlife to watch and fish to catch. Very few recreational boaters use this pond other than fishing boats, canoes, and kayaks. Since it is not used as much as the other ponds, its lack of recreational boaters is what makes this pond very nice to come and relax. There are only a few campsites, and they are spaced far apart. The water is somewhat clouded with algae and sand early in the season, but it is very clear later in the season as the growing river grass filters the water. The water gets clear enough to see about 14 feet below the water surface. At the end of the pond (near Roll Ways) is where the pond turns back into a river. We have heard some fishermen say that just a little ways up this river is excellent fishing.

-- Camping --

If you wish to reserve a campsite along the Au Sable River, you can call Huron Shores Ranger Station - (989) 739-0728.

-- Boat rental --

You can reserve boats, canoes, and kayaks from a few places in the Oscoda Area. You may contact the Oscoda/Au Sable Chamber of Commerce for a list of them.

-- Boat Launch --

There is only one boat launch along Loud Pond for motor boats and it is free. It is located next to Loud Dam and it does not have a dock. This is a dirt ramp and is very shallow and weedy. However, there are people who launch their pontoon boats here. As reference, I launch my 17 foot fishing boat here.
