Geocache Description:

One of the most interesting part of the Kiskúnsági National Park is the sand dunes of Fülöpháza. The still freely moving quicksand dunes (moved by wind) is unique in Europe.

In the pleistocenic ice-age Danube was not in its today's bed, but it ran into the Tisza through the Great Plain (Alföld), covering that area with thick river drift. As the ice-age ended the Danube created today's river bed. The wind then started to form the landscape, moving the sand throughout the area and creating sand dunes.
The wind's landscape-designing still can be seen in the Fülöpháza dune-area. In two still moving sand-dune plants cannot take roots which makes them easy to catch sight as no plants are on the dunes. There is some vegetation between the dunes and in some leeside area there were little sodic lakes but they are dried according to the very dry weather of the last decades.
The flora and fauna of the area changed to desert-like. The famous "maidenhair" (árvalányhaj), the symbol of the Kiskúnsági National Park, also can be found here.

On the road 52 (after the Fülöpháza exit) at N 46° 52.152'; E 19° 25.517' turn north toward the Somodi farm (tanya). Drive safely on the sandy road to reach the Somodi farm (N 46° 53.115'; E 19° 23.841'). The farm (tanya) itself is interesting too, you can not just eat here but you can also horse-ride. Park your car here and go for the cache straight ahead. The 20x20x7.5 cm cache cannot be seen, but the GPS will show the location very accurately. Believe it! It's covered by plants and grasses, please cover it well after you've found it.

We wish you a pleasant walk!

Anikó and Miklós
