Geocache Description:

An easy to find cache close to a beautiful stretch of the Thames, and oddly close to St. Moritz!

Lower Shiplake is a small village close to Henley-on-Thames set on a peaceful and very beautiful stretch of the river.

The name Shiplake most likely means 'stream where sheep are washed' (sheeplake) but it has also been suggested that it could be named after the final resting place of a Viking ship (ship loss) as the river was too shallow to navigate above Shiplake - though let's be honest, they were going some if the got upstream to Oxfordshire!

Anyway, in the Domesday book(1086) it was part of the 'Binfield Hundred' and the area named as Lysbrook, later Lachebroc (a sluggish stream) and Bolchede, later Bolney. The Lashbrook and Bolney names still exist today in street names. In fact if you park in the village at the Station you'll be walking along Bolney Road.

As you approach the cache location you'll find yourself on the Thames Path, the Chiltern Way and the Wokingham way all of which look like lovely walks, although (ahem) rather long!

If you approach from the Village side (as opposed to the river side) you'll understand the reference to St. Moritz. The large house hidden in the trees belongs to a Swiss banker (the polo fields on the other side of the path are all his too), and he has a scale building of St. Moritz station built by his extensive model railway. It has to be seen to be believed. As I understand the rolling stock is stored inside the station building which doubles as a loco shed. Take a look here to see just how precise the model is.

The area was flooded for weeks during the Spring 2014 floods, if it happens again, it'll be interesting to see just how "Watertight & Airtight" the contained actually is. The cache is not too difficult to find, in the area of the bridge.

Oh, and if you're FTF, the Gold Medal is for you to keep.

Happy hunting.
