Once upon a time we stabled horses and made ammunition here but this was all destroyed when it went up in smoke in 1941. This site has been the centre of the military administration in Saint John since the 1820s, and had gun batteries before that. Co-located here were the original 1880s Exhibition buildings. During World War One, the McAvity foundry used one of the buildings to produce ammunition. That Annex building was taken over by the military in World War Two and used it for barracks. It burned in 1941 killing a few soldiers of the Cape Breton Highlanders. The recently restored 1840s Ordnance building is the only remaining original structure on the site, having survived the 1877 Great Fire.
