Geocache Description:


"Y"MCA

This cache is located in part of the "Y", or former train turnabout, at Victoria Beach.
Back in the day, the train would arrive Friday evenings and the passengers and their luggage were unloaded.
Then the train would proceed backwards towards the Y so that it could turn around and be ready to depart.

The train was often filled mostly with the Dads who worked all week and came up on weekends to join their families. The kids would wait for their dads to arrive. And once everything was unloaded, the train conductor would allow the kids to hop on board and ride the train to the "Y" turnaround, after which it would then back up all the way back to the station in preparation for the return trip to the city.

Additionally, the mail arrived daily on the noon train. Since it would take about an hour to sort all the mail before the kids could pick it up from the post office, this gave them another reason to ride the train to the Y and back while they waited.

In a somewhat related matter, YMCA is a nonprofit organization for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. It is a powerful association of men, women, and children committed to bringing about lasting personal and social change. The Y is committed to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving their health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors.

YMCA was established to provide low-cost housing in a safe Christian environment for rural young men and women journeying to the cities (many for the first time) to work during the Industrial Revolution. The Y's were places for wholesome recreation that would promote good citizenship. The Y was founded by George Williams. By 1851, there were YMCAs in the United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States. The first YMCA in North America was in Montreal (Nov 25, 1851).


"YMCA" is also a popular 1978 disco song by the Village People.

This cache is NOT in the restricted part of Victoria Beach, so vehicle access is possible year-round. However, there is no parking anywhere near the trailheads. If arriving by vehicle, please park on Highway 59, and obey the "No Parking" signs.
If arriving via the east trailhead, do not block the gate.
