Liberty Rock Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

lizder: With a heavy heart, I have made the decision to close this cache. I have recently moved from the area, and with the constant vandalism of this cache, I just cannot maintain this anymore. I appreciate everyone who has taken the time to visit this location and leave such positive feedback. Liberty Rock means a lot to mec and I'm glad I was able to share it with everyone. -Liz

Geocache Description:

Liberty Rock is a historic landmark located in Sloatsburg, NY. It is said to have been used as a means to communicate via smoke signals during the Revolutionary War. Torne Mountain in Harriman State Park was also used for this purpose. Today, it boasts an incredible view of downtown Sloatsburg and beyond. It is a must-see... which is why I am surprised there was never a cache placed!

The Town of Ramapo recently purchased this land in order to save it from development. The Friends group of Sloatsburg's Harmony Hall has begun working with the NY/NJ trail conference in order to make an official trail up to this beautiful landmark. Although there are several ways to access the rock, this "trail-in-progress" is the best way to go. You will find the head of this trail to the left of the Sloatsburg Senior Center building on Liberty Rock Rd in Sloatsburg. The center is across from the Sloatsburg Public Library and behind the Super Seven gas station ... There is plenty of parking both on the hill by the senior building and below it across from the library. The trail is marked with LR markers. The cache itself is off the beaten path, but very accessible.

I recommend accessing this cache during the day, as it is almost always peaceful, quiet and muggle-free. Unfortunately, it seems to be a huge "party spot" at night.  You will find several fire circles built around the area, and you are almost guaranteed to find an obscene number of empty beer cans and other discarded objects...such a shame. A little CITO would be great if you're so inclined! :)

Congrats to Walkin' Ed FTF! :)
