Geocache Description:

This cache was placed for Hebron Day Activities on August 23, 2014 at Burnt Hill Park on East St. in Hebron, CT. The cache is a small plastic container that is well hidden and may take some searching to find.

The Peter's House dates back to 1750. The original house was much different than the one currently on location. Several additions, changes were made throughout the years. The house belonged to the Reverend Samuel Peter's. When the Revolutionary War started Peter's left Hebron and returned to England. He was a Tory and sympathetic to the King of England. In 1787, Peter's arranged to have his property sold including his slaves. His slaves were Cesar and Lowis Peter's and their children. Slaves took the last name of their owners. Cesar and Lowis and their children were forcibly taken by slave traders to Norwich to be put on ships to South Carolina. The people in Hebron were very upset over this and made up a story that Cesar had stolen some items. The local justice of the peace issued an arrest warrant for Cesar. Cesar and Lowis and family were brought back to Hebron. They remained in the area for the rest of their lives and eventually gained their freedom. There is much more information on this story if you are interested. It can be found at the website for the Hebron Historical Society.
