The Five Harbor Cultural Area is among one of the must see areas of Tainan.

The Five Harbors area was located at the south of Chenggong Rd., and at the west of Xinmei St. It extended to the south to the current Zhongzheng Rd. It was the channel formed by the Tia River. Different from the Chikan Cultural Area’s heritage since the Dutch era, the Five Harbor prospered during the reign of emperors like Tongzheng, Qianlong, Jiaqing during Qing Dynasty. In the Age of Sea Powers, the port area was where business opportunities were. The Beishi St. (Shennong St.) was famous because it was located at the north of Nanshi Port and south of the Fotou Port , and can reach directly the Shueshian Temple.
It was a big mistake to try to build an underground area beneath the Haian Rd. Many people’s residence were damaged, as well as the business opportunities along the street. But this mistake came with a mixed blessing: when the Haian Rd is opened to traffic again, those crumbling old houses became best canvas for groups of creative artists. Graffiti and artwork appear along the street and many unique stores, eateries and pubs came to Haian Rd., making it night must-see which extends for several hundreds meters. It is charming at evening or at night. If you are tired, be sure to come to Haian Rd. to take a break.
