A micro hidden amongst tropical plants. Make sure you check the opening times!
Peter Black Conservatory: Rhododendrons, orchids, amaryllis, pitcher plants, banana, cacao and mango trees, sugar cane, moa, ferns, water features, a geocache, and loads more. Bring a camera!
The conservatory was built in 1941 and the front porch was added in the mid 1980s (after the porchway of the time was extensively damaged when a car was deliberately driven into it!).
An extensive $450,000 overhaul was completed in April 2014 to stop glass panes of the roof falling from the ageing timber framework whenever it was windy. The glass roof is now strong enough to walk on.
Peter Black worked as the Curator of the Victoria Esplanade, and then the Superintendent of Parks, from 1908 to 1946. He gave lectures at Massey College (now Massey University) and by 1920 his skills were in such demand that the council hired him out at 5£ 5s per day.
Opening times:
Monday to Friday: 10am - 4pm
Weekends and holidays: 12 noon - 3pm
Entry is free, you can pay at the door.
The cache is about the size of a film cannister and can be easily reached from the path.
The conservatory staff know of the cache and are expecting you.
This cache is a tribute to an earlier cache in the conservatory: GC32MZP, A Nosey Bugger, by Braiden. No, this cache is not hidden the same way!
