You win some, you lose some: EAGLE & SURVEYOR Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

everplaid: First Verse:

From Aztec Shore to Arctic Zone,
To Europe and Far East,
The Flag is carried by our ships
In times of war and peace;
And never have we struck it yet
In spite of foemen's might,
Who cheered our crews and cheered again
For showing how to fight.

Chorus:

We're always ready for the call,
We place our trust in Thee.
Through surf and storm and howling gale,
High shall our purpose be.
"Semper Paratus" is our guide,
Our fame, our glory too.
To fight to save or fight and die,
Aye! Coast Guard we are for you!

Second Verse:

SURVEYOR and NARCISSUS,
The EAGLE and DISPATCH,
The HUDSON and TAMPA,
These names are hard to match;
From Barrow's shores to Paraguay,
Great Lakes or ocean's wave,
The Coast Guard fights through storms and winds,
To punish or to save.

Third Verse:

Aye! We've been always ready!
To do, to fight, or die
Write glory to the shield we wear
In letters to the sky.
To sink the foe or save the maimed,
Our mission and our pride.
We'll carry on 'til Kingdom Come,
Ideals for which we've died.

Geocache Description:

America's Tall Ship, the Coast Guard Cutter EAGLE, is visiting US Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown and the general public is welcome to visit. It will be moored in approximately the same location where the battle for the US Revenue Cutter SURVEYOR took place. Come learn about both ships anytime between 2 - 2:30 pm.

*** Sep 6 update: anyone over 16 years old will need to show a government issued ID to access the base. ***

USCGC EAGLE (visit link) is mooring up almost right where the US Revenue Cutter SURVEYOR (visit link) was taken by the British after valiant defense during the War of 1812. The coordinates bring you to a spot not far from a historical marker describing the SURVEYOR and the foot of the pier.

Who: USCG Training Center Yorktown is opening part of its grounds to the general public for visiting the USCGC EAGLE. All geocachers are welcome to attend!

What: (1) Swing by the coordinates to meet & greet.
(2) Check out the historical marker discussing the loss of the USRC SURVEYOR to British forces (you lose some). (Optional)
[PS - the US Revenue Cutter Service (visit link) became the US Coast Guard in 1915.]
(3) Take the 1/3 mile walk down the pier to visit the Coast Guard's training ship, the USCGC EAGLE, which we took from Germany as a war prize in World War II (you win some). (Optional)

When: September 6, meet & greet anytime between 2:00 and 2:30 PM.

Base Access: The driver of the entering vehicle will need to present a valid drivers license.

Parking: Parking is directed and could require up to a five minute walk to the event location. Don't worry if you forget your GPS - Training Center personnel will guide you toward the pier. (Of course, you might want to take coordinates of where you parked. ;) Our meet and greet will be off to the left when facing the pier. Depending on where you are directed to park, you may have to walk up and down a steep, 30-foot (9 meter) paved incline. There will be no special handicap parking (since, to get to EAGLE, you have to walk 1/3 of a mile each way anyway).

Visiting EAGLE: Your optional visit will be guided by officer candidates assigned to EAGLE for training. They will meet you at the foot of the pier, walk you the 1/3 mile to the cutter, walk you around deck, and escort you back. There may be a wait, depending on how many people stop by to visit. There is a steep gangway (with secure handrails) which you will have to walk up and down to board EAGLE.

Bonus benchmark: As you walk the pier to EAGLE, look off to your right and you'll see the tall stack of the power station. That stack is this benchmark (visit link)

Moments notice cancellation: in the unlikely event the EAGLE's visit is cancelled, Training Center access for the general public will be revoked. I will post multiple notices if that happens.
