Revolutionary War Fort Martin NSDAR Woodburn Chapter

Heavy pine tree coverage makes gps jump around.

Pull all the way off the road when parking; watch for coal trucks.


In recognition of Colonel Charles Martin’s Fort.

From “The Chronicles of Border Warfare:” The fort was erected about 1773 by Charles Martin, who came from Eastern Virginia. In June 1779, a murderous scene was enacted at this fort. The greater number of men had gone to the fields to work & others were loitering about the walls. The women were occupied with milking the cows. Indians rushed forward and killed three settlers & took several into captivity. 

The site of Fort Martin was excavated in 1979 with over 8,000 artifacts recovered.

The Daughters of the American Revolution is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2015. A non-profit, service organization with over 177,000 women members who can prove lineage back to a Revolutionary War patriot. The DAR promotes historic preservation, family history & education. The historic marker was placed in 1929.

Colonel Charles Martin is a recognized DAR patriot. He became a Captain, furnished supplies for the war, and was a member of the House of Delegates in 1782. He was also a Commissary for West Augusta.
